MY NAME IS DAISY. Daisy Porter. I didn’t know where I was from for 100 years. My brother thought we were going to die—or at least some of us—so he told me. I guess you could say it was an act of compassion.

   It didn’t feel like that. It felt like my whole world was crumbling. Everything I had known, everything that had made me who I was. I think he felt guilty for taking me from my parents and my time, imagining what my life could have been but wasn’t. A normal childhood. A stable home. But with his words, he just did it again. My mother, my sister, my brother, my entire life, pulled out from under me. None of it was really mine.

   We made it through that first battle, fighting insects that weren’t really insects, but tiny war machines that infiltrated the skin and burrowed deep into our vital organs. I scowled at him and was mad at him for telling me, and mad at him for
